What is a dental crown, and how is it used in dentistry?

Dr. Yasi Sabour of The Dental Studio describes the dental crown as a restoration used to cover the natural tooth structure to strengthen or protect it. Dental crowns are used in various scenarios, making them a popular and versatile solution to many dental concerns. This porcelain restoration acts as a “cap” over the tooth structure and is made to match the patient’s existing teeth for natural-looking results.

How is a dental crown used?

Our team will use dental crowns in various situations, such as the following:

  • Covering a tooth with a large dental filling. While dental fillings are the most reliable way to restore a tooth with a cavity, there are times when the cavity is so large that the dental filling compromises the natural tooth structure significantly. When this happens, Dr. Sabour often places a dental crown over the tooth to offer extra protection and strength to keep the tooth from breaking.
  • Protecting a tooth after root canal therapy. Root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, is performed to save a tooth from extraction. However, removing the dental pulp inside the tooth can leave the tooth structure weak and brittle. A dental crown will protect this tooth and allow patients to avoid removal.
  • Replacing a single missing tooth with a dental implant. Dental implants are titanium posts used to hold restorations that replace one or more missing teeth. Dental crowns are used over the abutment of a dental implant to address the loss of a single tooth.
  • Creating a dental bridge. The dental bridge replaces one or more teeth in a row and is fabricated with dental crowns fused to false teeth or pontics.
